A Meissen Böttger porcelain waste bowl, decorated in Augsburg by Abraham Seuter

A Meissen Böttger porcelain waste bowl, decorated in Augsburg by Abraham Seuter

The porcelain circa 1720, the decoration circa 1730

20.4 cm wide

Decorated in iron-red on the exterior with three panels of wild animals after Johann Elias Ridinger above gilt laub und bandelwerk and a further panel in the interior.

The bowl is remarkably light and thinly potted with a pronounced warp. As is so often the case, the hausmaler, or home decorators, had access to such slightly imperfect undecorated pieces.

A similar bowl from the Martha Isaacson Collection, Seattle, is illustrated by Siegfried Ducret in Meißner Porzellan, Band II, No. 275 where it is attributed to Abram Seuter after an engraving by Ridinger.
