A DOCCIA COFFEE CUP
Circa 1750
7.5 cm. high
No mark
Two other cups with nearly identical flower sprays (but with a different disposition of bugs) from the Hans Syz collection, now in the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, and another from a private collection, were both exhibited in ‘Baroque Luxury Porcelain : the manufactories of Du Paquier in Vienna and of Carlo Ginori in Florence’. This shows that the sprays must have been copied directly from a print source such as those by Maria Sibylla Merian. [i]
It was noted that this style of decoration was popular at the Du Paquier factory in Vienna around 1730-35 which suggests that it might have been painted by one of the artists at Doccia who are recorded as coming from Vienna.
