A CHELSEA SILVER-SHAPED PLATE

A CHELSEA SILVER-SHAPED PLATE

Circa 1752
23.0 cm diam.

Flamboyantly painted with a design, adapted from the Japanese kakiemon, of a dragon suspended from bamboo above prunus and pine before a tiger.
The form of the three-cornered plate is taken from an original model of Nicholas Sprimont, the silversmith from Liège who established and was the principal of the Chelsea porcelain factory. Little silver attributable to Sprimont survives but oval dishes of this design used as stands for sauceboats can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Condition – Minor surface wear.

Provenance – Sibyl Hermele Collection
