A VINCENNES TWO-HANDLED COVERED CUP AND SAUCER

Gobelet ‘à lait’ à côtes et soucoupe of the second size
The cup and cover 11.4 cm. high
The saucer 17.9 cm diam.
Interlaced ‘L’s enclosing date letter ‘A’ for 1754

Little is known about the gilders at Vincennes since gilders marks were not used at this early period, but presumably this decoration was applied by the small number of painters recorded there. The scale of these birds is impressive and reminiscent of the painted decoration of Armand l’aîné.

Rosalind Savill comments that Gobelet ‘à lait’ were usually sold singly and used for milk (Savill 1988,p. 669).
