A Small Ko-Kutani type dish, Hizen

A Small Ko-Kutani type dish, Hizen

Circa 1650-60
14.3 cm diam.

With a magpie on a cliff above the sea, looking down on the waves crashing against the rocks below. Painted with a freedom that epitomises this period of Japanese design.

Decorated in the palate traditionally associated with the early enamelled wares of the town of Kutani. The idea that these pieces were all made in the small town of Kutani, or even just the Kaga province it is a part of, is no longer accepted. It is now thought that they were produced more widely.
