A BRITISH DELFT PUNCH POT

A BRITISH DELFT PUNCH POT

Circa 1770
Probably Liverpool
30.8 cm high, 30.8 cm across

This large punch pot is decorated with Chinese pagodas amongst trees in a rocky riverscape.

The skilful potting, the quality of the glaze and the painstaking decoration are exceptional with few parallels in English delftware. We had considered the possibility of it being Irish, but this seems unlikely in view of its relatively late date. Some similarities with Liverpool tin-glazed stoneware and creamware point to a centre such as Liverpool.
