A DOCCIA PORCELAIN GILT-METAL MOUNTED SNUFF BOX

A DOCCIA PORCELAIN GILT-METAL MOUNTED SNUFF BOX

Possibly painted by Gioacchino Rigacci
Circa 1765-70
7.7 by 4.6 by 3.7 cm

The lid finely painted with a half-length figure of a woman holding a flower and seated in a chair, the front, rear and underside panels painted with landscapes, the sides and the lid interior with flowers, the corners with diaper panels,

Alessandro Biancalana illustrates a snuff box from the Carlo Colli collection with similar landscapes and a stippled figure of a girl which he attributes tentatively to the painter Gioacchino Rigacci, on the basis that he was employed in the decoration of “tabacchiere a paesani” (snuff boxes with small village landscapes) at the factory by 1759.[i]

A similarly decorated double snuff box in the Kunstindustrimuseum, Copenhagen and a box perhaps by the same hand from the Helmut Joseph collection are illustrated in Beaucamp-Markowsky (1985), no. 478 & 481.

Condition:
Some very minor surface wear to glaze on underside of the base
