A PORTUGUESE FAIENCE SHIP DISH

Inscribed
“LAMARE CHALLE”
Circa 1625 – 1650
31.7 cm diam.

The border, divided into three panels, with pairs of deer in landscapes which derive form Ming ‘Kraak’ porcelain of the Jiajing period. The centre is painted with a three masted galleon under full sale blow the text: “LAMARE CHALLE” within a carefully painted scroll and undulating medallion border.[i] Two flags of alternating stripes fly from the stern and mainmast.

This dish dates from around the end of the period known as the Iberian Union (1580-1640) when Spanish Habsburg monarchs ruled over both the Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms.

Condition:
A large section restuck, associated crack. Rivets removed.
